Mao's interpretation of the Marxist-Leninist tradition was probably not "the true and faithful interpretation." The "lonely monk without either Laws or Heaven" did, however, achieve a far more important goal, that of showing one of the possible roads to socialist transition. Why a study on Mao within the history of political ideas? The answer may be thus encapsulated. Mao showed deeply rooted contradictions wich were never reconciled in a non-contradictory and complete system of thought, nevertheless, he continuously pursued a means of clarifying the multifaceted character of reality, rather then setting the ultimate laws of historical development.
