The edition of the short treatise by Cesare Mocca, royal physician to Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy, not only partially fills this gap but also leads to a critical reformulation of the notions we received about the medical treatises of that time, and on their language.

L'ultimo romanzo, incompiuto, di Kafka, la cui stesura ebbe inizio nel gennaio 1922 (l'autore non ha ancora quarant'anni e ne mancano due alla morte per tubercolosi faringea) e proseguì fino al settembre dello stesso anno. Non esiste una versione definitiva dell'autore che anzi dispose che il manoscritto fosse distrutto. Più che un romanzo "Il castello" si può definire un insieme di frammenti in cui il personaggio K., arrivato a un non-luogo, un misero villaggio immerso nel freddo, tenta di avvicinarsi alla meta, il Castello appunto. Sono frammenti di "vuoto", "stanchezza", "solitudine", presentimenti di una non-vita che attende l'autore nei meandri dell'ultima meta.
