Boccaccio fu traduttore di classici e lettore curioso e attento di alcune fra le più brillanti traduzioni di testi antichi o tardo-antichi. La vivace presenza dei volgarizzamenti nella testura delle sue opere induce a rivedere la valutazione della loro ricezione. I lettori erano affascinati dall'emulazione del mondo antico e dalle ambientazioni anticheggianti del racconto ma non padroneggiavano gli strumenti linguistici per attingere direttamente ai classici. Ed è per soddisfare le esigenze di questo pubblico semicolto che lo scrittore ricorre alla mediazione dei volgarizzatori. Il fatto che tenesse aperti sullo stesso tavolo - come parrebbe - testo latino e versione volgare ce lo fa intravedere dunque in cerca di uno stile "latineggiante".
