Abstract: Il metodo grafico, nato in Germania nei laboratori di fisiologia, fu portato a maturità nella seconda metà del XIX secolo al Collège de France da E.-J. Marey e dal suo meno noto successore C. E. François Franck. La fisiologia come disciplina autonoma si strutturava così sulla base di un tentativo di geometrizzazione e immobilizzazione visuale del movimento vitale. In questo saggio si espongono i successi e gli scacchi di questo programma di ricerca ricostruendo i momenti salienti della biografia scientifica dei due fisiologi. / The graphic method in physiology, invented in Germany, was brought to maturity in the second half of the nineteenth century in France by E.-J. Marey and his lesser known successor François-Franck. Physiology as an autonomous discipline was structured on the basis of immobilization and geometrization of vital movement. In this essay the successes and drawbacks of this research programme are outlined by reconstructing the highlights of the two physiologists’ scientific biographies.
