Prontera’s studies focus on major figures of Greek culture (Herodotus, Eratosthenes, Polybius and Strabo), who played a leading role in the foundation and transmission of geographical knowledge. As shown in these studies, the Late Hellenistic Period saw relative progress in ancient cartography regarding the profile of the Mediterranean Sea and the Asian continent, as well as “regional” areas characterizing the Oikoumene: the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, Sicily and Asia Minor.
