Enrico Panzacchi ebbe vasta notorietà nel secondo Ottocento e nei primi decenni del Novecento non soltanto grazie alla sua attività critica e oratoria, ma anche per il volume dei Lyrica, qui riproposti per la prima volta in un’edizione critica e ampiamente commentata, che furono ristampati più volte e che ebbero un’influenza non superficiale anche su poeti quali Carducci, Pascoli e D’Annunzio. Il volume comprende le celebri romanze che per l’armonia poetica e musicale, oltre a meritarsi il plauso dei contemporanei, furono anche scelte per essere musicate da diversi compositori dell’epoca: come quella in cui un angelo, abbandonate le gioie del paradiso, invita la sua bella ad aprirgli la porta offrendole in cambio l’amore. In alcune poesie funerarie, poi, dedicate oltre che ad amici e familiari anche a celebri personalità del tempo (Mazzini, Napoleone III e Pio IX) traspare inoltre un senso doloroso della vita, una mesta riflessione sulla fugacità del tempo e sulla realtà della morte.
