A Firenze, nell'estate del 1501, un uomo chiamato Antonio Rinaldeschi fu arrestato e impiccato per aver tirato sterco di cavallo sull'immagine della Madonna esposta in un tabernacolo. La pena fu severa, anche per quei tempi, dato che i crimini dei quali fu accusato, bestemmia, blasfemia e tentato suicidio, non erano normalmente puniti con la pena capitale. Sacrilegio e Redenzione nella Firenze rinascimentale indica una serie di nuove fonti, scoperte in relazione all'episodio.
