Uno dei testi classici dell'alchimia tradizionale, scritto da frate Basilio Valentino dell'Ordine Benedettino sulla grande Pietra degli antichi sapienti: "Così, con questo trattato, ho voluto aprire e indicare, per quanto mi è stato lecito, la Pietra degli Antichi che ci è stata concessa per la consolazione e la salute degli uomini in questa valle di miserie come il sommo dei tesori terreni: così leggi attentamente perché non ho scritto per mia utilità ma per quella dei posteri. Dopo aver acquisito la conoscenza dagli scritti di molti uomini esperti, così dalla mia dottrina sottomessa alla filosofia e sobria di parole quanto abbondante di senso, mi auguro che anche tu possa ottenere la Pietra alla quale si appoggia la verità, con ricompensa temporale e auspicio di eternità". Basilio Valentino si crede sia stato un monaco benedettino nato a Magonza nel 1394 e presente nel 1413 nel monastero di S. Pietro a Erfurt (Germania). Sotto tale nome furono pubblicati tra la fine del 16º sec. e l'inizio del 17º vari scritti di argomento alchimistico e chimico.
