La rivista “Il Frontespizio”, nata nel 1929 e diretta dal 1931 al 1938 da Pietro Bargellini, ebbe la funzione di organizzare il rinnovamento della cultura cattolica dopo il Concordato con lo stato italiano. Dal ’37 dedicò i suoi fascicoli mensili ad artisti contemporanei, la cui opera, in tendenza col pensiero della rivista, attingeva senza “inquinamenti” intellettuali né estetismi fini a se stessi alla lezione pura e pofonda della vita attraverso la centralità dell’uomo e della natura: un’arte cioé in grado di resistere, come il concetto stesso di classicità, all’innevitabile variare delle mode. La lettera e il riesame di quella tendenza, chiosata da Marco Moretti “naturalezza come stile”, è stata proposta per la prima volta in una mostra a Monsummano Terme ideata e curata dallo studioso tramite un’antologia di oltre 130 opere.
