Ce second volume est dédié à la modélisation propres à l émergence de la forme architecturale gothique, à sa dimension proprement interprétative mettant en évidence les processus cognitifs mis en oeuvre par des concepteurs/constructeurs des cathédrales, lesquels révèlent des liens étroits avec les théories développées par les textes scientifiques et théologiques contemporains.

Tra i due testi di Ernst Gombrich raccolti in questo volume passano quasi vent'anni. Il primo, "The Debate on Primitivism in Ancient Rhetoric", risale al 1966. Il secondo, invece, è il testo di una lectio magistralis che il grande studioso tenne a Napoli nel 1984, sul "gusto dei primitivi". Al centro di entrambi è la riflessione sull'idea - che Gombrich dimostra essere ciclica nella storia dell'arte perché propria della storia del pensiero, mentre quella di "progresso" è relativamente recente - per cui le opere più antiche e meno sofisticate siano in qualche modo superiori moralmente ed esteticamente a quelle successive, molli e decadenti. Da qui l'esigenza di continue riforme (tipiche per esempio delle religioni e delle forme a esse collegate, da quelle liturgiche a quelle artistiche) che ritrovino la forza vitale delle origini. Una questione tutt'altro che "accademica" perché riguarda il nostro tempo più di quanto non si pensi. L'arte di oggi ha ancora il senso genuino, primitivo, delle grandi epoche di rinnovamento del linguaggio artistico oppure sta vivendo una "ciclica" fase di decadenza?
