The Metropolitan Museum of Art 1965, cm.16x24, pp.IX,292, brossura copertina figurata a colori. This volume, one of a series of three, documents the important Metropolitan Museum collection of American paintings by artists born by 1815. It includes some 315 paintings by nearly 120 artists dating from the early eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. The Museum’s collection includes works by world-renowned artists of the eighteenth century such as Joseph Blackburn, John Singleton Copley, and Gilbert Stuart as well as Romantic and Neoclassical artists such as Washington Allston, Thomas Sully, and Samuel F. B. Morse. The founders of the Hudson River school, Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand, William Sidney Mount, and George Caleb Bingham are also included in this volume. After an introduction on this time period in American painting by well-known scholar Oswaldo Rodriguez Roque, the book is arranged chronologically by artists' dates. Each artist and his or her works are grouped together, with a detailed biography. There are catalogue entries for each painting including related works, references, exhibition history, and provenance. The publication is a necessary part of the library of any scholar or enthusiast of American art.
