Manuscripts are the form of evidence most studied in this volume: the likely seventh- and eighth-century English ownership of a fifth-century copy of a Hieronymian commentary is meticulously reconstructed; an edition and full discussion of the eighth-century Anglian collection of royal genealogies and regnal lists advance our understanding of this difficult material; and it is shown that most of the drawings in the Junius codex of Old English poetry probably derived from an illustrated copy of an Old Saxon poem on Genesis which came to this country in the middle of the ninth century. Vernacular literature is well represented: two leading features of narrative technique are examined, one in Beowulf, the greatest surviving poem of the age, and the other in the works of Ælfric, perhaps its greatest writer of prose. A wide-ranging survey of some of the main problems in the modern-day study of Anglo-Saxon coinage makes a fundamental contribution both to that study itself and to the understanding of it by those in other specializations.

L’esposizione, a cura di Alessandra Zanchi e con il contributo scientifico di Rossana Bossaglia, si compone di 46 capolavori emblematici di 27 artisti (una selezione tra i nomi più rappresentativi). Il fine è di illustrare le caratteristiche e i cambiamenti della scultura nel cinquantennio successivo alla seconda guerra mondiale. Attraverso opere di grande impatto visivo per le notevoli dimensioni e per la qualità stilistica, la mostra illustra le problematiche formali e tematiche affrontate dagli artisti, che a partire dalle lezioni storicamente affermate di Arturo Martini, Marino Marini, Giacomo Manzù e Francesco Messina, si aprono a nuovi percorsi - Lucio Fontana e Fausto Melotti sono i portavoci delle prime nuove ricerche informali e concettuali - fino alle tendenze più attuali. La mostra entra nel vivo facendo convivere gli esiti scultorei degli anni Sessanta in poi, in oscillazione continua tra figurazione e astrazione. La tendenza aniconica è esemplificata dalla ricerca di Pietro Consagra sulla scultura “frontale” e prosegue con la produzione di Carlo Ramous, Giuseppe Uncini, Giuseppe Spagnulo, Mauro Staccioli; autori che si confrontano con la tecnologia contemporanea e l’uso di materiali industriali. Restano invece fedeli al marmo e al bronzo Andrea e Pietro Cascella, Francesco Somaini, Arnaldo e di Gio’ Pomodoro, mentre la figurazione come espressione di un messaggio ideologico sull’uomo contemporaneo, resta punto di riferimento per artisti quali Alik Cavaliere, Augusto Perez, Giuliano Vangi e Floriano Bodini. La scultura dell’immagine e dell’oggetto che risente delle influenze della Pop Art in Italia è esemplificata infine dai risultati tra il rassicurante quotidiano e il fantastico inquietante, di Mario Ceroli e Valeriano Trubbiani. Luciano Fabro, esponente dell’Arte Povera, traduce invece in scultura la purezza di immagini allo stato originario. La mostra si conclude con uno sguardo alla scultura “al femminile” rappresentata da Cordelia Von den Steinen e Alba Gonzales e alle ricerche ormai senza limiti di tecnica e di spazio dell’ultimo ventennio. L’esempio di Mimmo Paladino illustra come la scultura possa essere (a partire dal 1985 con le grandi opere in bronzo) una tra le molteplici tecniche sperimentate e scelte dall’artista per esprimere il proprio mondo interiore. D’altro canto l’attività di un artista straniero in Italia quale Igor Mitoraj, con la sua rilettura e interpretazione della scultura classica, dimostra come la scultura in senso tradizionale possa ancora stupire oggi.
