Manuscripts are the form of evidence most studied in this volume: the likely seventh- and eighth-century English ownership of a fifth-century copy of a Hieronymian commentary is meticulously reconstructed; an edition and full discussion of the eighth-century Anglian collection of royal genealogies and regnal lists advance our understanding of this difficult material; and it is shown that most of the drawings in the Junius codex of Old English poetry probably derived from an illustrated copy of an Old Saxon poem on Genesis which came to this country in the middle of the ninth century. Vernacular literature is well represented: two leading features of narrative technique are examined, one in Beowulf, the greatest surviving poem of the age, and the other in the works of Ælfric, perhaps its greatest writer of prose. A wide-ranging survey of some of the main problems in the modern-day study of Anglo-Saxon coinage makes a fundamental contribution both to that study itself and to the understanding of it by those in other specializations.

Il nuovo libro di Margaret Mazzantini (edito da Mondadori) porta sulla copertina un titolo dalle idee molto chiare: “Nessuno si salva da solo”. Nessuno si salva da solo. Da soli ci si può solo perdere. Ma anche in coppia. Anche se ci può essere e sembra che ci sia tutto ciò che basta, e invece non basta. È tutto qui. Il perché non basta, è il perché definitivo che non ha ancora una risposta definitiva, ma che ha comunque bisogno non di una risposta comoda e banale, che sarebbe fin troppo facile argomentare sul divano di casa o sul bancone del bar, sempre sottocasa, ma di una risposta che sia il più onesta possibile. Una risposta che ci ha rincorso e ci rincorre lungo tutta la durata (si spera ovviamente cospicua) del romanzo delle nostre vite, e non solo in questo di Margaret Mazzantini. La storia di Delia e Gaetano è la comunissima storia di una coppia che lo era, e ora non lo è più. Entrambi tra i trenta e i quarant’anni, due figli maschi, Cosmo e Nico, dai nomi strani e belli come quelli dei genitori. Una casa comprata assieme in cui ora ci abita solo la madre Delia con i figli. Mentre il padre Gaetano se ne è andato a vivere in un residence, qualunque. Come capita spesso di questi tempi. Nessuno dei due ha capito il perché è successo tutto. Nessuno dei due ha ancora trovato la pace. E una soluzione alle loro vite, che non sia dolorosa e piena di rancori e ferite e armi da sfoderare come parole da non pronunciare mai che vengono urlate sottovoce, senza guardarsi in faccia, senza guardarsi dentro. Solo per farsi male. Ovvero senza accorgersi di farsi male, ancora di più, inutilmente, a pungere le piaghe dei ricordi, e a confondere le immagini con i sensi. Una cena in un ristorante all’aperto può contribuire a riaprire gli stomaci stretti dalla rabbia e dal digiuno di felicità tranquilla. L’appetito per una pace esistenziale e un affetto amorevole arriva a ondate, alternato alla voglia ubriaca di trasgressioni scolate in bicchieri altrui che nessuno capisce da dove arrivi, anche se tutti ne riconoscono (a volte solo in privato) l’esistenza. Ma il tempo non può non contare. E se ne è passato troppo poco, il conto della cena sarà irrimediabilmente più salato di quello che si sarebbe voluto o immaginato. Come fare allora, per incontrarsi ancora, senza ferirsi il cuore? Forse serviranno anni. Forse le lauree dei figli. Forse quando le schiene saranno curve il dolore per l’amore perduto sarà passato. Oppure semplicemente non saremo più in grado di sentirlo. Quasi…
