Abstract: Although not widely known, Adriaen de Vries was one of Europe's foremost sculptors. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, in co-operation with the National Museum in Stockholm and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, devotes a breathtaking exhibition to this great unknown artist. On account of this, this comprehensive work will be published. Adriaen de Vries was born in The Hague around 1556, but he spent the greater part of his life abroad. He worked in places such as Florence, Milan, Turin, Augsburg and Prague. Among his requisitioners were emperor Rudolf II, the Danish king Christian IV and various German monarchs. Adriaen de Vries was renowned for his bronze sculptures; vast ensembles serving as fountains, as well as small sculptures for collector's cabinets. Because of his obstinate style and his great sense of composition, he is regarded as an important pioneer of the Baroque. A number of prominent European and American art historians collaborated on this book. New technical and historical research is presented here alongside optimal renderings of almost fifty sculptures.
