Charles Le Brun (1619-1690), premier peintre de Louis XIV, décorateur, ornemaniste et théoricien d'art, a peint pour Colbert, en 1672, la coupole du pavillon de l'Aurore, situé à l'est du domaine de Sceaux. A l'occasion de la récente restauration du pavillon, l'ouvrage invite à la découverte ou la redécouverte de la riche iconographie de la coupole - décorée du char de l'Aurore annonçant celui du Soleil qui provoque le réveil de la terre. L'analyse de l'ensemble des dessins et cartons préparatoires de Le Brun, conservés au musée du Louvre, ainsi que l'étude de toutes les étapes de la restauration de la peinture, enrichie de nombreuses photographies, permettent de mieux comprendre l'histoire de ce décor.
