Le lettere scritte da Rilke alla moglie Clara Westhoff nell'ottobre del 1907, al ritorno da visite compiute alla esposizione di Cézanne allestita nel Salon d'Antonine, sono di solito più citate che lette. Un poeta e narratore non ancora del tutto libero da scorie provinciali, anche se conosce l'Europa, con una cultura singolare, vasta, anzi vastissima, ma non di eguale qualità, trova nella mostra di Cézanne l'occasione per leggere in se stesso come mai gli era prima accaduto, e per formulare princìpi cui si mantiene fedele per il resto della vita. L'incontro sembra predestinato: Rilke cercava da anni quello che le due sale gli offrono di colpo, con tale intensità da renderlo, sulle prime, sconcertato. L'assimilazione, in ogni modo, è rapida: l'uomo che esce dall'ultima visita compiuta alla mostra non è lo stesso che vi era entrato due settimane avanti. Il Rilke che appartiene al nostro secolo sembra avere una seconda nascita nelle aule del Grand Palais, che Matisse e i suoi amici, quattro anni prima, avevano inaugurato in modo memorabile.
