Scoperto di recente tra le carte lasciate da Jesi, dopo che una intricata vicenda editoriale lo aveva nascosto per trent'anni, "Spartakus" occupa un posto di indubbio rilievo nell'opera del grande mitologo e germanista, offrendo una delle sue più originali e riuscite prove di scrittura. Non si tratta infatti di una "storia del movimento spartachista", ma di un'appassionata fenomenologia della rivolta intesa quale immediata "sospensione del tempo storico" e distinta pertanto dalla rivoluzione, che comporta una strategia a lungo termine, tutta calata nei processi della storia. Certo, "rivolta" è in primo luogo l'insurrezione del gennaio 1919, che Jesi ricostruisce quasi miniandola nel ritmo serrato della prosa: in quei giorni, lungo le vie di Berlino, "ogni gesto valeva di per se stesso", gli uomini combattevano negli altri uomini il volto disumano, mitico-demoniaco del potere e l'atto "meno deliberato e più conchiuso in se stesso", la scrittura, si rivela paradossalmente esperienza collettiva. Per questo, Spartakus tratta sì di Rosa Luxemburg, ma anche molto di Dostoevskij, di Storm, di Fromentin, di Brecht, nonché di Eliade e di Thomas Mann.

Traditionelle Weltvorstellungen werden zu Beginn der Neuzeit von der reformatorischen Bewegung ebenso betroffen wie religiöses Empfinden und theologisches Denken. Hauptgegenstand der hier gesammelten Forschungen ist das für viele Reformatoren zentrale Problem, ob die göttliche Wahrheit der Offenbarung in als historisch bedingt erkannte Medien (Bild/Sprache) eingefangen werden könne bzw. ob eine Hierarchie der Medien zu hypostasieren sei. Die Überlegungen des Theologen Thomas Müntzer zur Sprache als Medium göttlicher Offenbarung und zugleich als potentielles Instrument der Täuschung von Gläubigen durch Schriftgelehrte bilden den Ausgangspunkt der meisten Beiträge. Ausgehend von der Notwendigkeit einer differenzierten Analyse bestimmter Aspekte des Gedankengutes der einzelnen Reformatoren, wird eine pauschale Aufteilung der deutschen Reformation nach sozial-politischen Kategorien fragwürdig.

Robert Coates, writing in the New Yorker in 1946, first used the term "Abstract Expressionism" to describe the richly colored canvases of Hans Hofmann. The name stuck, and over the years it has come to designate the paintings and sculptures of artists as different from one another as Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko, Lee Krasner and David Smith. The achievements of this generation put New York on the map as the center of the international art world, and constitute some of the twentieth century's greatest masterpieces. From the mid-1940s, under the aegis of Alfred H. Barr, Jr., works by then little-known American artists--including Pollock, de Kooning, Smith, Arshile Gorky and Adolph Gottlieb--began to enter the Museum's collection. These ambitious acquisition initiatives continued throughout the second half of the last century and produced a collection of Abstract Expressionist art the breadth and depth of which is unrivalled by any museum in the world. Supplemented by an essay by Ann Temkin, Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at MoMA, this volume celebrates the richness of the Museum's holdings of the paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and photographs from this epochal moment in the history of art and of this institution.
