Questa considerazione aiuta a comprendere le altre due funzioni predominanti nell'arte medievale: da un lato la mediazione fra realtà terrena, e mondo spirituale; dall'altro l'esaltazione del potere e della potenza divini e anche di coloro che li amministravano in terra.
