Il sigillo, nato nella notte dei tempi come documento di autenticità del possessore, cambia in gran parte il suo utilizzo alla fine del '700 con l'introduzione del cachet. Diminuisce quindi l'importanza delle matrici a tutto vantaggio delle impugnature, che fanno dei sigilli oggetti di alto artigianato o addirittura gioielli tali da essere annoverati fra le arti minori. Sono realizzati nei materiali più diversi e rivelano le correnti artistiche del periodo. Talvolta prodotti anche in piccole serie, sono firmati dagli stessi scultori o sono riproduzioni in miniatura di opere famose. Il volume ne illustra una straordinaria collezione di oltre 500 pezzi, catalogati e suddivisi secondo la tipologia (semplici, con busti o figure femminili, maschili, infantili, animali, e ancora a ciondolo, calchi etc.) o il materiale dell'impugnatura (in madreperla, in legno e cuoio, in avorio, corno, osso, in pietre dure, in pietra lavica, in marmo, in porcellana, in vetro e cristallo, in galalite, bachelite o resine sintetiche, in metallo, smalto, mosaico etc.). Ogni sigillo è corredato da una breve didascalia che ne riassume le caratteristiche formali, le dimensioni e il significato della matrice.

It depicts the wealth, productivity and complex civilization of the India of the great Mughals and shows how Europeans, including the English, were drawn to its shores, seeking the privilege of trading in its fine muslins, printed cottons and spices. The English East India Company had long insisted on sovereignty within its commercial bases on Indian soil, and a significant body of opinion argued for more secure territorial holdings in the subcontinent. The catalogue attempts to illustrate and analyse the history of India and the British for over 300 years with more than 500 illustrations of the weapons, fabrics, coinage, books, drawings, paintings, prints, sculpture, manuscripts, miniatures, jewellery and maps featured in the exhibition. The book is an illustrated history of India and a contribution both to Indian history and to an understanding of the European experience of colonialism.
