Questo saggio vuole comprendere invece i motivi più profondi di questo genere letterario e definire con chiarezza i rapporti fra arte e comportamenti sociali. L'autore analizza 963 opere di letteratura erotica, dall'antichità classica fino al surrealismo, da Lisistrata di Aristofane a La monnaie vivante di Klossowsky, tratteggiando le personalità di 344 autori. Alexandrian tenta anche di distinguere i libri erotici che possono di diritto entrare nella letteratura e quelli che rimangono solo documenti psicopatologici, fermo restando che non esiste in realtà distinzione tra erotismo e pornografia, quanto tra erotismo e oscenità, che degrada il corpo e la persona.
