Vissuta a cavallo tra due secoli, Bianca Piccolomini Clementini (1875-1959) è un personaggio più che mai attuale. Partita da una concezione religiosa, tipica dell'epoca, assai rigorista, ha sciolto pian piano questa durezza in un rapporto caldo e intimo col Divino, aiutata anzitutto dall'Eucaristia e ha saputo poi trasmettere alle sue figlie spirituali il meglio della sua esperienza. Una vicenda che ha ancora molto da insegnare anche ai cristiani di oggi.

Un événement, une rencontre suffisent-ils à expliquer qu’on embrasse une foi qu’on n’a jamais pratiquée ? A travers l’itinéraire de cinq grandes figures du XXe siècle, Catherine Chalier interroge le sens et l’enjeu de la conversion. Comment pourrait-on venir à Dieu par ses propres forces s’il n’avait avec l’homme un lien ineffaçable, fût-il fragile et oublié ? Depuis l’Antiquité grecque et biblique, philosophes et spirituels ont médité cette interrogation pour penser la conversion. Au coeur de l’histoire tragique du XXe siècle, malgré l’impuissance du Dieu biblique à se manifester par des signes secourables, les penseurs étudiés dans ce livre ont continué de veiller sur ce lien. Se convertir, ce fut en effet pour eux résister à la fatalité du mal, à l’absurdité et à la défaite humaine. Que leur itinéraire soit essentiellement philosophique avant de s’ouvrir à la mystique (Henri Bergson), qu’il s’accompagne d’une méditation ininterrompue des livres juifs (Franz Rosenzweig) et chrétiens (Simone Weil, Thomas Merton) ou des deux (Etty Hillesum), ils ou elles discernent ainsi, peu à peu, comment le plus profond, l’âme ou le soi humain, est habité par le plus haut. Venir à Dieu serait donc bien revenir à Lui dont l’appel en chacun reste vivant, même quand il reste longtemps en souffrance. Dans l’optique biblique toutefois, ce revenir ne ressemble pas au retour philosophique de l’âme vers une patrie perdue : il se produit comme un advenir et une promesse.

Per stile e per contenuto queste rivelazioni sono molto diverse rispetto a quelle che Giovanna sperimenterà negli anni successivi e ci svelano un altro aspetto del suo profilo spirituale. Il lettore accede ad esse anche agevolato da un elaborato indice tematico. L’edizione è stata realizzata da Maria Teresa Casella Bise pochi mesi prima della sua morte (avvenuta il 2 febbraio del 2021) e rappresenta l’ultimo frutto di una lunga esperienza di studio dedicata all’editio princeps dell’opera completa di Giovanna Maria della Croce.
