The first major battle in the Western theatre of the American Civil War (1861-1865), Shiloh came as a horrifying shock to both the American public and those in arms. For the first time they had some idea of the terrible price that would be paid for the preservation of the Union. On 6 April 1862 General Albert Sidney Johnston caught Grant and Sherman by surprise and very nearly drove them into the River Tennessee, but was mortally wounded in the process. Somehow Grant and Sherman hung on and the next day managed to drive back the hordes of grey-clad rebels.

In 1543 three Portuguese merchants entered a turbulent Japan, bringing with them the first firearms the Japanese had ever seen: simple matchlock muskets called arquebuses. They proved a decisive addition to the Japanese armoury, as for centuries the samurai had fought only with bow, sword and spear. In 1575, one of the greatest original thinkers in the history of samurai, Oda Nobunaga, arranged his arquebusiers in ranks three deep behind a palisade and proceeded, quite literally, to blow his opponent's cavalry to pieces, marking the beginning of a new era in Japanese military history.

When Philip II ascended the throne in 359 BC, Macedonia was in danger of being engulfed by wild barbarian tribes to the north and wily Greek cities to the south. Philip had to expand the power of the throne or be swallowed up: the creation of a powerful army was imperative. When his son, Alexander, inherited his kingdom at the age of 20, he also inherited an army which was truly unrivalled. The Macedonians were veterans of battle, well equipped and eager for conquest. Add to this Alexander's supreme gifts as military commander and it is little wonder they achieved so much. On Holy Ground: Liturgy, Architecture, and Urbanism in the Cathedral and in the Streets of Medieval Florence asks just one question: had the Florence Duomo never been excavated, what could we have known of the legendary cathedral of S. Reparata below it? The answer comes through the transcription of two key texts: one, never published until now, was written for the cathedral clergy around 1190; the other was composed around 1230, and printed just once, in the eighteenth century. English translations bring to life the liturgical year in medieval Florence, from the gorgeous pageantry of Christmas to the plaintive rites of Easter. The archaeological finds now make sense of the chapels, altars, and hallowed tombs that are cited in the texts.The volume then reconstructs the canonry (torn down around 1840), where the officiating priests lived, and the neighboring buildings on the cathedral square: a hospital, a school, and a prominent city gate that long ago disappeared, and a Baptistery, bishop's palace, and confraternity headquarters that are still standing.One chapter is devoted to the religious processions that ventured forth from S. Reparata to wind through the streets of Florence. Here the old texts are brought to life by the towers, bridges, churches, and monuments that survive from medieval Florence. The processional routes are examined for their social, political, and economic importance to the cathedral clergy, and the way the routes delineated the main lines of Roman Florence. The final chapter explores the food that poured onto the tables of the cathedral clergy from the farms and villages of the Florentine countryside. Altogether, the volume provides an exceptional look at the physical and spiritual impact of Florence's thousand-year-old cathedral in the age of Dante.

Questa che sarà la sezione più importante e dal taglio antropologico, esporrà manufatti delle varie Nazioni indigene, oggetti d'uso e cerimoniali: i ben noti caschi piumati, vasellami, armi, gioielli delle più varie forme, tipologie e materie, quali collane fatte con zanne e unghie di animali, splendidi abiti in pelle animale con vivaci decori realizzati il più delle volte con perline di vetro dai colori brillanti, e altri capi d'abbigliamento maschile e femminile. Come ricco corredo iconografico, alle pareti saranno esposti dipinti, sculture e fotografie del XVIII e XIX secolo, eseguiti da artisti che entrati in stretto contatto con i nativi ne hanno rappresentato la vita quotidiana: fra questi si distingue Joseph Henry Sharp, cui appartiene il capolavoro della mostra che occuperà la sala da ballo della Galleria: Crucita, una ragazza di Taos.La mostra consentirà finalmente al grande pubblico di apprezzare dal vivo significative testimonianze della civiltà dei nativi d'America, nota al pubblico solo attraverso le fantasiose ricostruzioni della filmografia americana e esclusivo oggetto di studio degli Antropologi culturali.
