Nella maggioranza di queste fotografie, Della Valle si conferma regista-attore consumato e sapiente che, nel costringere l'avventura alla dimensione antropologica privata della propria abitazione, intuisce, amplificandola, la costante salgariana di un esotismo casalingo. Il surreale contrasto fra il rebus proposto dagli attori e la soluzione offerta dalle singole illustrazioni sembra evocare i set dei film ad animazione combinata con la ripresa del vero, con attori che interagiscono e consumano contro invisibili interlocutori il loro talento espressivo. L'artista napoletano Alberto Della Valle (1851-1928), illustratore principe dei libri d'avventura del grande Emilio Salgari, per meglio preparare le sue tavole metteva in scena insieme ai familiari mascherati i momenti salienti del romanzo salgariano di volta in volta affrontato, da I misteri della Jungla nera fino a Le meraviglie del duemila, passando per titoli celeberrimi come Il Corsaro Nero e Le Tigri di Mompracem. Trovata la posa idonea, Della Valle scattava delle fotografie alle quali ispirarsi per i suoi disegni. Paola Pallottino ricostruisce la vicenda di Della Valle e analizza questi preziosi documenti fotografici mettendoli a confronto con il risultato finale, ovvero le illustrazioni dei volumi di Salgari.
