Il volume indaga l’importanza e il significato dell’operazione del Ventura – -una raccolta di sole lettere dedicatorie in volgare e in latino –- alla luce del coevo panorama editoriale italiano e rileva l’importanza della lettera di dedica come strumento non solo di comunicazione ma anche e soprattutto di patronage. Le lettere, parola dello stesso Ventura, sono «quasi porte» che permettono al tipografo di avvicinare gli uomini più illustri e di accedere alla loro «amicizia». La consapevolezza del valore dello strumento epistolare è sorretta da un accorto uso del linguaggio da parte del Ventura, autore – egli stesso – di lettere, entro le quali adotta un vero e proprio lessico tecnico della dedica, con una metaforologia e una topica ricorrenti.
