Sappho von Lesbos, die frühgriechische Dichterin, gilt seit jeher als Meisterin, ja als Inbegriff lyrischer Poesie. Zu allen Zeiten wurde ihre Kunst gepriesen: von Platon, Catull, Horaz über Friedrich Schlegel bis hin zu Marie Luise Kaschnitz. Während bis heute keine Anthologie abendländischer Lyrik ohne Sapphos Gedichte auskommt, ist das Interesse an ihrer Person vielfach vom Sapphischen auf das Lesbische verlagert, oft erschöpft es sich sogar darin. Der fragmentarische Erhaltungszustand ihrer Gedichte und die spärlichen Lebensdaten trugen schon seit der Antike dazu bei, daß die Gestalt der Dichterin hinter einem Schleier von Fabeleien und Legenden fast völlig verschwand. So wurde sie zu einer "bekannten Unbekannten der Weltliteratur" (Schadewaldt).

The ten papers which make up this volume were originally presented at a conference on 'The Greek and Roman Historians', held at the University of Leeds in 1983. Some of the articles investigate in detail the assumptions, prejudices and methods which were brought to their works by writers as separate in time as Herodotus and Ammianus, as opposed in outlook as Thucydides and Dionysius, or as different in practical approach as Xenophon, Plutarch and Tacitus. Other papers, more wide-ranging in scope, examine respectively the validity of the traditions about early Rome, the function of historical writing in Rome of the second and first centuries BC, and the contemporary and later source material for the Caesarian tyrannicides. In an Epilogue the editors discuss the main themes which emerge from the collection.

Caesars Entschluss, den Rubicon zu überschreiten und mit Soldaten in das Stadtgebiet einzumarschieren, weil der römische Senat ihm keine Zugeständnisse machen wollte, ist sprichwörtlich. Die Macht der großen Imperatoren war mit dem Gebot der Gleichheit in der römischen Führungsriege nicht mehr vereinbar. Die Entscheidung sorgte für das Ende der Republik. Caesars Gegenspieler Pompeius hätte sie vermutlich nicht getroffen. Caesar wich mehrfach von etablierten Verhaltenstraditionen ab und verweigerte sich dem Sachzwang. Es gab damals einen Veränderungstrend hin zur Monarchie, die Diagnose des Verfalls der Republik und das Gefühl der Ohnmacht. Auch wenn die Umstände sich verändert haben, ist uns dieses Gefühl heute wieder sehr vertraut. In diesen Zusammenhang ordnet Martin Jehne seine Betrachtungen ein.
