Immortalized in later centuries in works by Lord Byron, Giuseppe Verdi, Eugène Delacroix, and others, Francesco Foscari reigned as the powerful doge of Venice during tumultuous years from 1423 to 1457. The stuff of legends, his life was marked by political conflict, vengeful enemies, family heartbreak, and, at the end, the forced relinquishment of the ducal throne. Yet Foscari left behind no personal papers, and until now, no complete biography of him has been written. This book, a thorough and fascinating biography, fills that longstanding gap, illuminating not only the life of the man but also the history and culture of fifteenth-century Venice. Dennis Romano reconstructs Foscari?s life through careful reading of extant governmental records and chronicle sources. He also uses architectural monuments built by Foscari and his heirs as critical interpretive keys for unlocking the personality and policies of the doge. Romano analyzes how art and power intersected in Renaissance Italy and how the doge came to represent and even embody the state. With this biography, Romano clears away longstanding myths, fills in previously unknown details about Foscari?s triumphs and ordeals, and allows to emerge the first intimate portrait of this singular doge.

The literary contributions include a major study of Aldhelm's Latin prose style, arguing against its supposed 'Irishness' and placing it firmly in the main tradition of rhetorical amplification coming through from ancient times. In the field of vernacular poetry a prevalent, but illogical, interpretation of a thematically significant obscurity in Beowulf is challenged, and Cynewulf's penitential concern is emphasized. The physical remains of the eighth-century watermill at Tamworth and a compiled survey of early medieval mill terminology are correlated. Old English place-names containing Latin loan words are reconsidered. The sources of a fourteenth-century Icelander's knowledge of late Anglo-Saxon history are further delineated in a third, concluding article on the Játvarthar saga. Galbert of Bruges's De multro, traditione, et occisione gloriosi Karoli comitis Flandriarum is an eyewitness account of the assassination of Charles the Good, Count of Flanders, in 1127 and the ensuing civil war. This book forms a companion to the text which was discovered in the 15th century in Bruges and has subsequently been available in French translation. Jeff Rider argues that this is not a true journal but a revised and edited history of events between March 1127 and July 1128. He discusses how the chronicle developed, Galbert's sources, how he organised his notes and wrote his text and its literary qualities. This is a detailed study of an important piece of historical writing. One third of the book comprises notes and appendices.
