Studien zur Kultur des mittelalterlichen Griechenland im Spiegel hagiographischer Quellen. Frankfurt, Peter Lang Verlag 1997, cm.16x23, pp.309, brossura. Diese Arbeit stellt die erste Kulturgeschichte der Provinz Griechenland in mittelbyzantinischer Zeit (800 - ca. 1204) dar, wobei die Skizze im wesentlichen auf einer bisher noch nie in dieser Weise zusammengestellten und mit ca. 20 Viten verhältnismäßig breiten hagiographischen Quellenbasis beruht. Des weiteren wurden Handschriften und Inschriften als Quellen herangezogen. Anhand der vorweg gegebenen Kulturdefinition werden in einzelnen Kapiteln der Heilige innerhalb des sozialen Geflechts (sowohl zu Lebzeiten als auch danach) und das Bildungswesen thematisiert. Die innerhalb des christlichen Lebens wichtige Stifter- und Gründungstätigkeit wird anhand von Inschriften untersucht. Den Abschluß des Hauptteils bildet ein Vergleich der Städte Athen und Thessalonike. Die Arbeit verdeutlicht das breite Spektrum der Kultur Griechenlands, das als «provinzielle, kirchlich-monastische Kultur» sicherlich einen eigenständigen Wert für sich beanspruchen darf.

Brillant chercheur et enseignant, president de diverses societes savantes et fondateur d'une des grandes maisons d'edition anglo-saxonnes, Derek Brewer a ete, en 1998, titulaire d'une ? Chaire interuniversitaire au titre etranger ? de la Fondation Francqui. Le point d'orgue du sejour belge de l'eminent professeur de Cambridge devait etre marque par l'organisation de la rencontre d'une ? Classe d'excellence ? , c'est-a-dire le rassemblement de medievistes belges. L'occasion etait belle de renouer les contacts entre les membres de la section belge de la Societe arthurienne et d'encourager la relance des activites nationales. Drainant un bel ensemble de specialistes chevronnes et de jeunes chercheurs, la journee connut effectivement un franc succes. Comme en temoigne ce volume d'Actes, la mise en commun des ressources a revele une etonnante richesse, qu'il s'agisse de l'eventail des secteurs couverts ou encore des approches retenues par les participants. Les quatre invites etrangers, Derek et Elisabeth BREWER ainsi que Donald et Sara MADDOX (tous deux de l'Universite du Massachusetts a Amherst), entrainent le lecteur dans le temps, l'espace et meme le momnde de l'heraldique. Les auteurs belges completent a merveille le panorama en traitant du Moyen Age anglais, francais, latin et neerlandais, mais aussi de la facon d'enseigner la litterature medievale.

Work in this volume offers insights into the Anglo-Saxons' literature, both Latin and vernacular, their study of Latin, their documents, art and artefacts, agricultural practices, their cognizance of Roman predecessors, and later Icelandic knowledge of them. The literary contributions include a major study of Aldhelm's Latin prose style, arguing against its supposed 'Irishness' and placing it firmly in the main tradition of rhetorical amplification coming through from ancient times. In the field of vernacular poetry a prevalent, but illogical, interpretation of a thematically significant obscurity in Beowulf is challenged, and Cynewulf's penitential concern is emphasized. The physical remains of the eighth-century watermill at Tamworth and a compiled survey of early medieval mill terminology are correlated. Old English place-names containing Latin loan words are reconsidered. The sources of a fourteenth-century Icelander's knowledge of late Anglo-Saxon history are further delineated in a third, concluding article on the Játvarthar saga.
