Abstract: The Vatican does not recognise the state of Israel. Motivated by concern for the Holy Places of Jerusalem, the Palestinian refugees and the Christian communities of the Arab world, it has consistently advocated 'peace with justice' in the Middle East. At the same time, sensitive to the issues of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, the Catholic Church has been vulnerable to pressure from Zionist groups. Livia Rokach describes, in fascinating detail, the complex and highly-charged relationship between Catholicism and Zionism, from the 1890s to the 1980s. She examines the Vatican's evolving policy towards the Palestinians; the influence of Zionist lobbies on American and French Catholics; and the complicating factor of Lebanon. Using extensive documentation, this study sheds light on a little-known aspect of the Israeli-Arab conflict.
