Charles Bovary, un modesto medico di campagna, sposa in seconde nozze Emma Rouault. Emma, sognatrice e romantica, è presto delusa dalla mediocrità del marito e dalla sua vita in provincia. Bovary, per distrarla, si trasferisce a Yonville dove Emma è corteggiata da un giovane, Léon, che però non le confessa il suo amore e parte per Parigi. Emma diventa l'amante di Rodolphe, un dongiovanni di provincia, da cui però è abbandonata. La donna, sconvolta, cerca in ogni modo di stordirsi. A Rouen ritrova Léon, ma ben presto stanca anche lui. Inizia così la degradazione di Emma: si indebita con un usuraio, all'insaputa del marito, e non sa come pagarlo. Chiede aiuto a Léon e a Rodolphe poi, disperata, si uccide. Bovary si lascia lentamente morire.
