Il punto di partenza di questa particolare ricerca consiste nel ritrovamento di un manoscritto redatto da Giuseppe Marchini, funzionario storico dell'arte della Galleria degli Uffizi nel 1967 intitolato Opere d'arte danneggiate a Firenze e in provincia in cui si elencano tutti i danni che era stato possibile rilevare al patrimonio artistico di Firenze e della provincia. A distanza di 50 anni dall'alluvione tale documento risulta prezioso per la quantità di informazioni contenute. Esso prende in esame le opere di proprietà statale e di enti pubblici, quindi musei, chiese, conservatori e anche tabernacoli, suddivisi per località e luoghi, specificando anche l'ambiente in cui le opere hanno subito l'inondazione e l'altezza raggiunta dall'acqua. L'elencazione asettica fornisce nel suo insieme una vasta documentazione che non risulta sinora essere stata resa nota, dato che le notizie dei danni sono state pubblicate in modo frammentario ed è inoltre non limitata ai soli dipinti più o meno illustri, ma anche agli arredi e ad altre tipologie.
