#42586 Arte Pittura
This volume both reconstructs the œuvre of the artist who was among the few collaborators of Nicolas Poussin, and reveals the archaeological basis of his paintings. Through the finely scrupulous research of the author, with the assistance of Professor Antonio Giuliano, every ancient remain represented in Lemaire’s Roman paintings has been identified and traced to a real and precise source. Thus it is demonstrated how the great French painter located himself at the origins of the scientific study of classical antiquity, among those in the circle of Cassiano Del Pozzo, called antiquary or ‘antiquaries’ who sew the seed that would become modern Archaeology. The book provides probing insights into issues concerning our understanding of the terms classicism and veduta painting; it explores the relationships between patrons and collectors and treats both the subjects of the works and their method of production. In all, sixty paintings, twelve drawings and thirty refuted works are catalogued. The book is composed of 320 pages with 300 illustrations of which 100 in colour.
