London, Not Published (printed by G.Woodfall, London) 1834, cm.26x33,3, pp.(2),83,(1), un ritratto inciso all'antiporta, rilegatura dello stampatore in tutta tela verde con titoli e cornice in oro al piatto anteriore. Il verso dell'incisione all'antiporta reca applicato. un biglietto della duchessa di Sutherland che dona l'opera a D.P.Colnaghi. George Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland KG, PC (1758 - 1833), known as Viscount Trentham from 1758 to 1786, as Earl Gower from 1786 to 1803 and as The Marquess of Stafford from 1803 to 1833, was a British politician, diplomat, landowner and patron of the arts. He is estimated to have been the wealthiest man of the 19th-century. He remains a controversial figure for his role in the Highland Clearances. James Loch became interested in the management of estates, and was simultaneously auditor to the George, Marquis of Stafford (who married Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland, and became shortly before he died Duke of Sutherland). In this capacity he was responsible for much of the policy respecting the agricultural labourers and the improvement of agriculture pursued over tens of thousands of acres both in England and Scotland. The "Sutherlandshire clearances" of George, Marquis of Stafford, by which between 1811 and 1820 fifteen thousand crofters were removed from the inland to the seacoast districts, were carried out under his supervision
