The west bank of the Nile opposite the modern city of Luxor, often referred to as western Thebes, is probably the richest archaeological site in the world. This area has attracted travelers since ancient times, and many have left their impressions of the monuments in the form of graffiti, historical texts, scholarly books, and travel guides. Beginning even before Napoleon's expedition to Egypt in 1798, which included a large group of scholars, architects, artists, and scientists, Europeans flocked to visit and record the ruins of ancient Thebes. Independent scholars such as John Gardiner Wilkinson lived at Thebes for extended periods; professional Egyptologists such as Jean-Francois Champollion, Ippolito Rosellini, and Karl Richard Lepsius organized scholarly expeditions to the site. The beauty of the landscape and monuments such as the Colossi of Memnon, the Ramesseum, and the royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings also inspired poets, writers, and artists such as the romantic painter David Roberts, who published more than 100 works, many based on sketches done at Thebes. Explorers and Artists in the Valley of the Kings presents some of the wealth of etchings, sketches, and watercolors that were produced by European travelers to western Thebes between about 1740 and 1860 and tells the story of Europe's rediscovery of the ancient civilization of Egypt.

Il conte Giuseppe Primoli discende per parte di madre da Luciano Bonaparte, fratello di Napleone. Luciano viene considerato il capostipite del ramo romano dei Bonaparte in quanto aveva fissato la sua residenza nello Stato Pontificio fin dal 1805, quando a causa di dissidi con Napoleone fu costretto ad abbandonare Parigi e la vita pubblica.Giuseppe Primoli, nasce a Roma nel 1851 dal matrimonio di Pietro Primoli con Carlotta Bonaparte. La discendenza di Carlotta dai Bonaparte era duplice: infatti suo padre Carlo Luciano, principe di Canino, era figlio di Luciano, mentre sua madre, Zenaide Bonaparte, era figlia di Giuseppe Re di Napoli e poi di Spagna.Colto, appassionato bibliofilo, abile fotografo, Giuseppe Primoli visse tra Roma e Parigi ed ebbe intensi rapporti con gli ambienti letterari ed artistici delle due citté. Visse a Parigi fra il 1853 e il 1870; si diplomé in diritto e la sua formazione culturale si completé nei salotti intellettuali delle zie Matilde Bonaparte e Giulia di Roccagiovine. Determinante fu senza dubbio il rapporto con Thé ophile Gautier, intimo della principessa Matilde, che per primo guidé il giovane conte Primoli sulla via delle arti. Nel vivace e stimolante ambiente parigino egli assorbé il gusto e il piacere per una vita intessuta di relazioni mondano-letterarie e gli anni dell'esperienza francese, interrotta bruscamente alla caduta del secondo Impero nel 1870, assunsero nella sua memoria un valore quasi mitico. Ritornato a Roma nel 1870, Giuseppe Primoli approfondé la conoscenza della cultura italiana del tempo: frequenté scrittori e giornalisti come Boito, Giacosa, la Serao, D'Annunzio e le redazioni di giornali come il Fracassa, il Fanfulla della Domenica o Cronaca Bizantina, che rappresentavano in quel momento il crogiolo pié vivace della nuova generazione di intellettuali italiani.
