Brillant chercheur et enseignant, president de diverses societes savantes et fondateur d'une des grandes maisons d'edition anglo-saxonnes, Derek Brewer a ete, en 1998, titulaire d'une ? Chaire interuniversitaire au titre etranger ? de la Fondation Francqui. Le point d'orgue du sejour belge de l'eminent professeur de Cambridge devait etre marque par l'organisation de la rencontre d'une ? Classe d'excellence ? , c'est-a-dire le rassemblement de medievistes belges. L'occasion etait belle de renouer les contacts entre les membres de la section belge de la Societe arthurienne et d'encourager la relance des activites nationales. Drainant un bel ensemble de specialistes chevronnes et de jeunes chercheurs, la journee connut effectivement un franc succes. Comme en temoigne ce volume d'Actes, la mise en commun des ressources a revele une etonnante richesse, qu'il s'agisse de l'eventail des secteurs couverts ou encore des approches retenues par les participants. Les quatre invites etrangers, Derek et Elisabeth BREWER ainsi que Donald et Sara MADDOX (tous deux de l'Universite du Massachusetts a Amherst), entrainent le lecteur dans le temps, l'espace et meme le momnde de l'heraldique. Les auteurs belges completent a merveille le panorama en traitant du Moyen Age anglais, francais, latin et neerlandais, mais aussi de la facon d'enseigner la litterature medievale.

C'est donc avec un grand plaisir que nous accueillons le livre de notre collègue romaine, qui depuis longtemps est bien connue pour ses travaux sur l'hagiographie et la culture du haut Moyen Age. Elle nous donne une solide biographie, ouvrant des perspectives sur la famille et la jeunesse du futur pape, et, dans des chapitres bien construits, enrichis de notes et de citations, elle présente la façon dont Grégoire a gouverné l'Eglise de Rome et a exercé son pouvoir dans toute la chrétienté. S. Boesch Gajano montre comment Grégoire a été partagé entre contemplation et action, comment - tout en restant fidèle à une foi et à une doctrine solides - il a pu habilement faire aboutir ses projets, malgré une faible santé et une situation politique bien troublée. This book forms a companion to the text which was discovered in the 15th century in Bruges and has subsequently been available in French translation. Jeff Rider argues that this is not a true journal but a revised and edited history of events between March 1127 and July 1128. He discusses how the chronicle developed, Galbert's sources, how he organised his notes and wrote his text and its literary qualities. This is a detailed study of an important piece of historical writing. One third of the book comprises notes and appendices.
