Il codice è di ampio formato e splendidamente decorato, seguendo la tradizione dei codici su San Francesco: è ornato da 17 affascinanti miniature che rappresentano episodi della vita del Santo, seguendo lo stile dei freschi di Giotto ad Assisi. La presenza di sfondi d'oro suggerisce un mecenate ricco, con l'ipotesi che potrebbe essere la figura femminile misteriosa presente nelle miniature.
