The author first examines the historiographical background. He shows how intensive research in neglected archives has undermined the picture of 'a worn-out, helpless age' which discouraged historians after Stubbs. The most fundamental revision of opinion concerns the political relationship and roles of crown and nobility, and this the book's central theme.
