The history of contemporary American metalsmithing is inextricably linked with the academy. Since the 1950s, nearly every significant artist working in metals has trained at a university or art school—fertile ground for innovation and exploration in metalsmithing and jewelry making. The University of Wisconsin-Madison's metals program is among the best in the nation, founded on the teaching legacy of Fred Fenster and Eleanor Moty, who instilled in their students a profound respect for craftsmanship, technical innovation, formal integrity, and thoughtful design. The work in this catalogue encompasses hollowware and jewelry, wearable sculpture, poetic and narrative objects, and conceptual installations. The thirty-six works in THE SETTECENTO IN VENICE reflects the sparkling Venetian sensibility so influential in the artistic development of Europe. Throughout the 18th century Venice had been losing the solid economic and political power acquired during the glory of the previous centuries. The Settecento was an age of economic decline, but with an incredible artistic fervour supported by the painting tradition from the 15th century onwards. Quarantaquattro fotografie di grande formato raccontano il conflitto ancestrale tra uomo e natura e tra uomo e uomo; l’uso della natura come difesa dall’altro uomo e parimenti la difesa dell’uomo dalla natura. Con la montagna come sua simbolica rappresentazione, il progetto origina da un’esplorazione dei territori e delle costruzioni fortificate del nord-est italiano legati al primo conflitto mondiale, uno degli ultimi momenti nella storia dell’umanità occidentale in cui il destino e l’esperienza dell’uomo erano strettamente connessi all’ambiente naturale, alla sua conformazione, alle sue leggi e al suo controllo. Attraverso un lavoro durato circa tre anni, Valsecchi ha percorso quelle montagne con il suo banco ottico, sublimando nei suoi scatti una realtà cruda in forma spesso astratta, intimamente estetica e assoluta nella sua essenza. Le immagini di Bellum diventano squarci, portali fatti di luce e composizione, sospesi in un tempo senza termine tra silenzio, isolamento e attesa. Il volume accoglie i testi di testi di Florian Ebner, curatore capo del Cabinet de la Photographie del Centre Pompidou di Parigi, e Yehuda E. Safran, critico d’arte e di architettura e professore presso il Pratt Institute di New York.
