Inizialmente pubblicato a puntate sul "Giornalino della Domenica" tra il 1907 e il 1908, il libro è scritto in forma di diario: il diario di Giannino Stoppani, detto Gian Burrasca. Questo soprannome, datogli in famiglia a causa del suo comportamento molto irrequieto, è divenuto col tempo un nuovo modo di definire tutti i ragazzini "discoli". E Giannino di guai ne combina davvero tanti: fa scappare i fidanzati delle sorelle, rompe vasi, allaga la casa, strappa l'unico dente di Zio Venanzio, dipinge di rosso il cane di Zia Bettina, tira l'allarme di un treno... Alla fine i genitori decidono di mandarlo in collegio.
