Biographie intellectuelle d'un protagoniste de l'Italie libérale: Napoleone Colajanni (1847-1921). Essai sur la culture politique d'un sociologue et député sicilien à l'âge du positivisme (1860-1903) Médecin, sociologue criminaliste, professeur de statistique à l’Université de Naples, journaliste de renom, député pendant 31 ans du collège de Castrogiovanni (Sicile), Napoleone Colajanni (1847-1921) est un protagoniste de l’Italie libérale dont la renommée scientifique et politique est internationale. Afin de rendre compte de l’engagement de cette figure complexe et polymorphe, en le restituant systématiquement dans son contexte, l’auteur n’a pas fait le choix d’une biographie classique mais a entrepris d’étudier la culture politique de Colajanni dans ses fondements théoriques (le positivisme évolutionniste) et dans ses applications pratiques (le réformisme démocratique). La pertinence heuristique de cette méthode a été expérimenté pour démontrer comment les théories scientifiques et philosophiques informent les conceptions politiques. Contre un préjugé historiographique encore très répandu, on trouvera ici la preuve que le positivisme italien n’est pas un courant pauvre et secondaire de l’histoire intellectuelle italienne. L’opposition entre la sociologie progressiste colajannienne et le déterminisme racial de Lombroso est emblématique des enjeux scientifiques majeurs du tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles, tout comme la position scientifique et politique de Colajanni en faveur d’un socialisme qu’il est le premier théoricien italien à définir hors du marxisme et en rapport très étroit avec l’évolutionnisme darwino-spencerien. Enfin, son engagement réformiste au service d’un projet de démocratie politique et sociale montre qu’il existe en Italie une culture démocratique qui n’est pas réductible au socialisme ou au libéralisme et qui trouve une de ses plus belles expressions dans la pensée méridionaliste progressiste.

One the most important figures in the history of art, his monumental paintings in the Sistine Chapel, his sculpture David in Florence, and his Pietà at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome are among the greatest human achievements of all time and remain the most visited and admired works of art in the world. Michelangelo's life has been the subject of many biographies over the centuries, but it was not until the appearance of John Addington Symonds's The Life of Michelangelo Buonarroti, in 1893, that a biographer had complete access to the artist's family archives. The Buonarroti archives were to be available to the public with the passing of the last family member, but even when that event occurred, in 1858, material from the archives remained closely guarded and only fragments emerged through the hands of family friends. The Italian government, predisposed to Symonds for his impeccable scholarship of Renaissance art, gave Symonds full access to the Buonarroti archives in the 1880s, the first independent scholar so honored. With the ability to consult the massive amount of material in the archives, Symonds produced the first documented, and considered by many still to be the best, biography of Michelangelo. Symonds's expertise as a historian and critic gives added depth to this biography, and it is here that the public first learned that translations of Michelangelo's poetry had been altered to opaque the artist's sexuality.
